NEW STEEL HELMETS.
FOR FRENCH TROOPS. North of France, August 12. French troops at the front are now being equipped with the steel helmets. Within a short time all the French in the firing line will be provided with this head-guard. Judging from the specimens which have been submitted to expert armorers for examination after use in battle they will prove a very efficacious protection for the soldier. The marks of bullets have been found on many of the helmets, whose owners would assuredly have been killed without them, and who have not even been wounded. In response to the request from the British General Headquarters for a number of these helmets to be tested by our troops, the Minister of War la taking immediate 6teps.to send them. It is a steel helmet in the special shape which the Sebastopol sappers had. It is in grey, with a device stamped on the front, varying according to the branch of the service and the regiment.
