THE HERMAN BANKRUPTCY. , Sydney, Oct. 19. In his bankruptcy examination J. Earle Herman estimated his liabilities at £23,162, and his assets, shorn as book debts, at £52,074. QUEENSLAND SUGAR CROP. Brisbane, Oct. 19. It is estimated that the sugar crop next season will amount to 170,000 tons. ' SIR G. REIiyS SUCCESSOR. Melbourne, Oct. 19. A Cabinet meeting on Wednesday will consider the appointment of Sir George Reid's successor. MINERS' STRIKE. Sydney, Oct. 18; Besides the Maitland lodges a number of Newcastle lodges have rejected the agreement. The miners asked fo:' an increase of 20 to 20 per cent., whereas the agreement provided for 6 per-cent. The matter lias again .been referred to a compulsory conference. Sydney, Oct. 19. The Maitland miners' meeting decided to give fourteen days' notice to strike. The men contbml that if the price of coal was raised 12s per ton they should be granted an increase of fid in the hewing rate instead of 3d For years the hewing r£te was reckoned on the 10s basis, though coal was actually selling at lis per ton. The men claim that they have long been underpaid and that the rise to 12s is equivalent to a two-shilling' rise.
