A QUEEN CARNIVAL.

A TARANAKI SCHEME. iPreliminary arrangements are now in hand for organising a Queen Carnival in Taranaki. The scheme has originated with the New Plymouth Sports Ground Committee, and the first step has been to obtain the approval of the New Plymouth Patriotic Committee, and this having been given the committee is now awaiting similar recognition from .the patriotic bodies in other towns in Taranaki. One of the principal, ideas which the committee has is to make the carnival a Taranaki carnival, and not to allovr parochialism to enter into the scheme. It is proposed to hold the carnival next February, and the promoters expect that if the various towns in the province combine to make a big effort a sum of £20,000 or £30,000 should be collected, the whole of the profits to go to the Wounded Soldiers' Fund. A carnival recently held in Southland produced £66,000, and elsewhere the results have been equally gratifying, so that the people of Taranaki should have no hesitation in embarking upon such a project. I£ is proposed that every county should gupport a queen in addition to one from New Plymouth as follows:-™ New Plymouth district (headquarter* at New Plymouth). Egmont county (headquarters at Opuiiake). Stratford and Whangamomona counties (headquarters at Stratford). Eltham county (headquarters at Eltham). Hawera county (headquarters at Hawera). Clifton county (headquarters at \Yaitara). Taranaki county (headquarters at Inglewood). This will mean there will be seven candidates for the honor of being Queen of Taranaki, and each candidate will have the support of a' definite district. A strong committee will be established at each headquarters and sub-commit-tees will work in the smaller centres. Each district will retain its own funds, less expenses, pro rata.
