THE VOLUNTEER SISTERHOOD. By Telegraph.—'Picas Association. OHristchurch, Oct. 10. Hon. G. W. Ruasall to-day made a statement praising the Work done by the Volunteer Sisterhood, but denying that the Government recognised the organisation, or is in any way responsible for looking after the nurses who join it. ''lt is impossible," he said, "to allow white women to go to the front for the purpose of undertaking a class of duties which should entirely devolve upon the colored races. If the movement is pe--sisted in I will exercise the powers vested in me as Minister in Charge of the National War Funds, with a view to putting matters'on a proper footing." (A Christchurch telegram of Thursday stated:—Miss Rout, sa>retary of the Volunteer Sisterhood, has reported that over £IOOO will be paid to the Defence Minister for the Volunteer Sisterhood in Egypt. Eight sißtcrs are being sent each for £IOO, 'the following bodies contributing:—The (Patriotic Committees of Gisbornc,. £200; Wanganni, Hawera, the Shearers' Union, Kirkcaldies, N.Z. Farmers' Co-op., and Grace Bros., of Carterton, £IOO. The nurses leave towards the end of the month.)
