THE GURKHA'S WAY.

HOW HE TREATS THE ENEMY. Among the Maori boys fighting at the front is Corporal Te Jtfatau Paraniti, whose mother resides at Marton. Just recently he was wounded, in writing to his mother he showed that the Maoris had been having a strenuous time. The letter just to hand states:—"When I was hit I didn't call out to any of my comrades, for I was afraid they might stop to help. Just as I was wrapping up my arm I heard another bullet whiz past my nose, I looked round to see where it was fired from, and I saw him—just a head sticking out of the ground. As soon as ho saw me looking at him he fired another, but he was too late. I got behind cover and captured him iu his hole. He was a sniper, and where I was hit there were heaps of dead soldiers which were shot by the same man. In the hole where he was captured he had one week's supply of cigarettes and food. Everything was taken off him, and he was escorted to the base a prisoner: and I tell you, before he got there, | a Ghurka cut his head clean oil' and left him there. The Gurkhas hate the Turks. I am enjoying my rest, after having a rough time over on the peninsula. I have been there fighting all the time for fully ten weeks. I can assure you a soldier's life is not very comfortable. Very little sleep, and wo sleep with everything on—equipment and rifle,"
