High prices are checking consumption, and driving public to buy magarine, which many retailers are assiduously pushing. Danish is nominally 201s, but the official quotation is temporarily suspended. The Germans are still paying huge prices. There ia a great scanty of other fats in Germany, and possibly butter and oil tickets wlil be introduced, similar to the bread tickets.
The Women's Association is circulating pamphlets throughout Germany giving instructions on how to cook without fat. Cheese is firm; New Zealand 78s. The Government lias resumed purchasing from Cauada.
Bank of England returns:—Coin, £59,708,000; reserve, £45,945,000; proportion of reserve to liabilities, 27.16; circulation, £32,560,000; public deposits, £70,860,000; other deposits, £07,907,000; Government securities, £25,900,000; other securities, £114,707,000. lu the Bradford wool market tops met with rather more enquiry. (U's on spot 38d; future, 30d; super, 60's, 37d and 3Sd, ordinary, 30d to 34d; SC's, 31% d; 50's, 28d; 4fi's, 24'/ s d; 40's, 22'/.d. Wheat is firm, with few offers. Flour is advancing and supplies sO'o short. Oats are firm. The Government has resumed buying. La Plata, OctoberNovember, 27s 4144. Bran and peas are hardening.

Melbourne, Oct. 14. The estimates of the wheat harvest range from 50 to 68 million bushels, which is a record. One Government statist estimates that 4,100,000 acres were sown, of which 3,900,000 will be harvested for grain. Wheat: Nominal. Flour: £.17. Oats: Chilian 3s, Japanese 2s aid to 2s 7d. Make: £4 4s to £4 10s. Bran: £4. Pollard: £6. Potatoes: £l2 to £l2 10s. Onions: £5 to £5 ss. Adelaide, Oct. 15. Wool: Active for all good classes; jd to above last sales. Inferiors were similarly lower.
MATTHEWS, GAMLIN & OO.'iS REPORT. Matthews, Gamlin and Co. report a fair yarding in tliieir Inglewood yards last Wednesday. Good springers were in better demand, and all store and forward cows sold freely at fully late rates. We quote: Springing heifers £5 10s to £8 10s, small do. £4 to £4 15s, springing cows £8 to £lO, forward cows £<) to £7 14s, store do. £5 to £5 los, empty heifers £3 3a to £3 12a 6d, yearling steers £3 7s (3d to £3 19s, do heifers (small) 28s to £2 45,-others £2 5s to £3 lis.
At Mr. J. Bridgeman's clearing sale we had a good attendance from all parts of the district. The cows, wliieh were a very good lot. sold freely at the following prices:—Good young cows in inilk £l2 to £l7, others from £8 to £l2, making an average of nearly £l2; pedigree bulls lo'/o to 17y 3 gns., yearling heifers £2 19s to £3 Is, small 325, horses (farm) £lO to £35 10s, hack £4 15s. sows with young £8 5s to £ll ss, store pigs 38s to £2 7s 6d; implements and sundries at satisfactory prices.

AUCKLAND. At Westfield Bards on Thursday laat I we had a large yarding and prices were better. Best dairy cows sold at from £9 to £l2; best dairy heifers, £6 to £10; other cows, £4 to £8 10s; other heifer?, £3 15s to £5 10s; aged and inferior cows, £1 10s to £4; empty [cows, £5 10s to £7; yearling steers, £2 7s to £3 15s; yearling heifers, £1 7s to £2 10s; calves, 10s to £1 lis; bulls, £5 to £lO. At Albert Yards heavy draughts £26 to £3O; medium, £lO to £2O; light harness horses, £8 to £l3 10s; hacks, £9 to £l7; ponies, £4 to £8 10s; weeds, 10s to £2; quantity of produce and harness at late rates.
At Warkworth on Friday three-year steers, £8 5s to £lO 10s; 2-year Bteers £6 Is to £7 8s; yearling to 18-nionths, £3 to £5 4s; best dairy cows and heifers, £7 10s to £11; others, £4 10s to £ti 15s; empty cows, £5 to £8; beef at fully Westfield rates. The advertised Shorthorn bulls made record prices for the district, selling at from £7 7s to £l7 17s. On Saturday, at Pukekohe', we had a large yarding of bulls of all descriptions, and wo report a most succesful sale. Shorthorn bulla sold at from £7 7s to 19i guineas, Holstein bulls £0 0s to 20 guineas, Jersey bulls £3 3s to £ls 15s. On Monday, at Pukekohe, best dairy cows sold at from £lO to £ls, best dairy heifers £8 to £l3 10a, other cows £.} to £B, other hoifers £4 15s to £6 10s, bulls £5 5s to £ll Is.
On Tuesday, at Pukekohe, grown steers in forward condition sold at from £ll Iss to £l3 7s, 3-year to ,'U-vear steers £9 7s to £ll 4s, 2-year to 3-year steers £G Is to £8 19s, yearling to 18-month £3 15s to £5 14s, steer calves £2 10s to £4 Is, heifers and cows in forward condition £5 15s to £2 10s, bulls £7 to £l2 12s, beef at fully Westfield rates.
At Westfield fat stock market on Wednesday extra prime oxen sold to £2 Cs per 1001b, others £2 3s to £2 ss; cows and heifers £1 15a to £2 ss. Steers sold at from £l4 10s to £22 15s, cows £7 JO.s to £l4. Some of the averages were: Alf. Main, Tamahere, 24 steers, averaged £2O 5s 6d; 40 steers from Okalmkura Estate, £l7 Is; 20 steers from Gollan Bios., £l7 Is; a truck from J. M. Scott, Cambridge, £l7; a truck of cows from W. Gray, Cambridge, £l3 Gs. Calves were penned in average numbers and improved in price. Sheep were penned in scarcely average numbers, and improved in prices. At Burnside 118 fat cattle were yarded. Owing to the small entry and but(fliers' stock. 1 ! being low, competition was exceedingly keen, and prices extremely high, advancing fully 30s compared with last week. Best bullocks made to £22 las, extra to £24 12a Bd, medium to £2O, lighter to £l7 sa, best heifers to £l6, medium to £ll, light to £8 10e.
Fat sheep—l2B3 penned, a small yarding of only fair quality. For the few pens of good sheep forward competition was very keen. Bust wethers made to 60s Gd, extra to 565, medium to 40s, liglii; and unfinished to 30s, best ewes to 48s 3d, extra to 545, medium to 30s, unfinished to 22a. Sixteen new season's lambs were keenly competed for and made up to 275.
