A HOPEFUL OUTLOOK, £■ RUSSIAN REPORT. PetrograJ, Oct. 10. A communique describes the fightingin the Dvinsk region us incessant. Both sides are capturing' trenches, und the artillery duels are of the liercast. It also shows that Avhile the Russians ai'e more than holding their uv/n in the lake region east of VUlia, they have been particularly successful in the southern region from near Piiisk to larnopol> in Galicia, having stormed several villages and fortified positions, with big hauls of prisoners s.nd ma-chine-guns. T'ne Austria/; communique admits 'that the Russians are in great strength, abundantly supplied with ammunition, and are attacking on the whole of the East Caliciau and Volhynian fronts, and have penetrated the Austrian trenches at two points near Tarnopol.
ANOTHER GERMAN REPORT. .CLAIMS MINOR SUCCESSES. Received "Oct. 11, 5.5 p.m. Amsterdam, Oct. 10. Berlin reports; The Russians attempted to recapture the positions at Yarbunowka, west o£ Bunaberg, but we repulsed them after severe lighting at close quarters. General von Linsingen captured the village of Sinozyyzy, southwestward of Pinsk. There is cavalry lighting at Kuchockawola and Je-sieroy,. and we repulsed several attacks between the Kovel-Eovno railway and Rafalowka. General von Bother's amy repulsed strong attacks north-westward of Tarnopol. ~';i.
ON THE STYR FRONT. RUSSIANS MEET WITH SUCCESS. Received Oct. 11, 8.40 p.m. London, Oct. 11. The Daily Telegraph's correspondent at the Russian isoutli-westem headquarters says the Russians opened a strong simultaneous attack on Thursday night, and advanced 3M; miles on the front of the river Styr to Garaimooku, everywhere capturing the first and second positions, despite resistance of large Austro-German forces. The Russians pierced the enemy front on Karpelovka-Machanitza-Nosovitch, AUSTRIAN REPORT. Received Oct. 11, 0 p.m. Amsterdam, Oct. 11. An Austrian communique states:— The Russians continued fruitless attacks in East Galicia. Some regiments lost half their effectives in the last few days.- The enemy was alio repulsed on the Strvpa i'ront.
GIVE AND TAKE. FIGHTING ON THE. EASTERN FRONT Received Oct. 11, 11.3-5 p.m. Petrograd, Oct. 11. There was an extremely desperate allday light on the Prochi line to Gafbuliowka, the latter village being taken and re-taken several times, we finally abandoning it. Our scouts, northward of Likhovitchi, in a night reconnaisance penetrated the enemy trenches, bayoneted 200 men, and captured 4S<>. The enemy near Czartorysk have crossed to the right bank of the Styr. The enemy's counter-attack south-eastward of Malaeheff was repulsed, and our cavalry routed the enemy eastward of Bucozacz and Bukowina.
