NORTH TARANAKI PATRIOTIC LEAGUE.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) In the report of the farewell social to departing members of tho reinforcements tho name, of Miss Tlielma Trim was inadvertently omitted from the list of performers. Her item, "Please give me a Penny, Sir," brought grist to the mill to the extent .of some 12s, and the item was well received. The financial result of tho social was so good that there , remains in hand sufficient to pay the expenses (inclusive of presentations) of at least two similar functions.
The Red Cross Market day on Saturday was very successful, considering all things. Although Hie- response from the country was not so large as anticipated, due more than probably to the want of canvassing, the result was quite satisfactory, over £2O being taken. Had a little more notice been given and application made to the country people for produce, the turnover could easily have been doubled, as numerous wouldbe customers, who came late in the afternoon and evening, found that there was nothing left to purchase. Vegetables would have sold like ripe cherries.
Although no decision has been arrived at yet by the ladies, it is generally hoped that the next market day will be on Saturday week. Townspeople are prepared to support the scheme both as donors and purchasers, and with more publicity in the country no doubt a very plentiful supply of goods will be sent.
