HAWERA.
FAREWELL TO SOLDIERS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) On Thursday evening a farewell social was tendered by the parishioners of St. f Joseph's to five of its members who are ; leaving for the front with the next reinforcements. A very pleasant evening was spent, during which musical items were rendered by Miss Reilly and Messrs Gormley, Colman, and Hooker, and recitations by Miss Kelly. Mr. B. McCarthy, in an appropriate speech, presented Lieutenant J. N. Rauch and Messrs R. Colman, J. Lawlor, B. Douglas, and S. Brown with a prayer-book each, on behalf of the Hawera Hibernian Society, which is already represented at the front by four of its members—one of whom, Private W. J. Rauch,'has been killed in action.
Then followed a presi ntation by Dean Power, from the ladies, of a set of rosary beads for each guest. The Dean, who was in excellent spirit, paid a tribute to. the lads who were going to fight for their country's honor. Following the presentation an excellent supper was provided by the ladies, and an altogether happy evening concluded witli the singing of the National Anthem.
