TUKI-' TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") The 1-lu.wke's Bay Hunt Club meeting lakes place at Hastings to-<lay, and the Hawkc's Bay Jockey Club's spring gathering to-morrow. Although robbed of a day by the Totulisator Permits Commi.-sion, the Hawkc's Bay Club lias now got practically even again. Acceptances for all events at the Hunt Club meeting are very satisfactory. The Hunt Club Cup has attracted nine, of which Tarero (who won so well at Wanganui), and Master Webb will not want for backers. Country Boy. Parewamii, and Roseblush may run well in the minor hunters' raecs.
There are some fair hacks engaged at lilt! meeting, notably Negative, who is well treated in the Hack Hurdles, and Deviation and Marimba, whose recent form suggests that they may show up in the flack Pint Handicap. The Jloroimi Handicap has filled well, thirteen good performer,.; being paid up for. Birkline ran a good race on Saturday, and may be better to-day. and Despatch Carrier would only require (o be half ready to give the fiisborne horse a good "go."
Waverley-Waitotaia nominations are very flattering to the little club which races on Labor Day. The Cup lias attracted Rewi Roto, Avon iPark, Welcome Nugget, Ratana, Wild Lupin, Imarose, Patronaie. Tangiwai, and other good horses. In the Flying, are King Cliiara, Depredation. Iceberg, Coropett. Combustion. Calais, etc., and in the Brewer Handicap, we find Rewi Poto. Tree Lu(crne, Avon Park, Olenroy, King Cliiara, Denise Orme, Tyson, Zetes, and other noted sprinters. Master Lupin stands out on jus own amongst the fourteen engaged in the Hack Hurdles. The remaining hack races give promise of big fields. There arc twenty-one in the Morton Memorial, twenty-four in the Jackson Stakes, and a similar number in the Wilson Stakes. Mr. Ceorge Morse will declare his weights about Mondav.
Reputation's sterling performances at the Australian Jockey Club's spring meetiiia; have been the centre of considerable interest this week. In three starts, the New Zcalander has scored a dead-heat for first, a second and a third. Being n fairly slow beginner, big fields have been against him, but. nevertheless, lie has done well. /Provided . the recent hard racing has not knocked him out he will lie seen out again on Saturday, in the Randwii'k Piute, two miles, in'whith he will carry I'st. Colonel Soult's failure in the Metropolitan Handicap would not upset his owners, Messrs. Cleeson and Casey, very much. "Moturoa" saw a letter from the former prior to the meeting, and he
candidly admitted that the horses over there were a cjit above the Colonel, Mr. flicenon was particularly impressed with the English-bred ■ho.r.sns, and as events have shown they have more than held their own with the '''whalers.''' The stipes were out for lash at Napier Park, and Jockey O'Shea. who has received a lot of attention from the same quarter in the past, was ordered to stump iip fifty quid! Only a jockey could do it! You'd have to shake most punters pretty hard to get fifty bob!
Montana defeated a big field in fine style in the Park Stakes. Marco Bello set the pace for seven furlongs, and then gave way to Red Book. Midnight Star and Montana joined Red Book at the home turn, and tile trio raced home together. Over the last bit Montana forged ahead, winning nicely from Midnight Star. The latter is spoken of as having a rough chance in the New Zealand Cup. Birkline was fourth. St. Elmn and Aruake tarried the bulk of the money in the Taradale Hurdles, but. backers of the former got a very bad run for their money. Aruake was always near the front, and had no difficulty in -beating the moderate Vascular at the finish. After Arnako's poor showing at Wanganui a much bigger dividend was expected.
