BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MEETING OF WORKS COMMITTEE. The meeting o£ the Works Committee of the New Plymouth Borough Council on Tuesday night was attended by Cr. Smith (chairman), the Mayor, Crs. Burgess, Collis, Hayden, Hill, Medley, Monteath, Sykes, and Watkins. In accordance with the recommendation of the Borough Engineer, instructions were given that the channeling in Devon Street from Sackville Street to the Waiwakaiho Bridge should be laid down in soltar macadam instead of concrete.

The letter from a resident complaining of the use of motor-bikes without silencers was referred to Inspector Tippins with instructions to enforce the bv-laws.

The charges for carting kerb stones I to the East End Bathing Reserve and Kawaroa Park were written off. The Frankley Road Settlers' Association were informed that the Council could not see its way to extend the water mains at Frankley Road, and that the metalling of Doralto Road cannot be undertaken at present. The Borough Engineer was authorised, should he deem it advisable, to purchase a tar boiler from Messrs Greenshields and Company. The letter from the Borough Engineer with reference to laying water-services to vacant sections and also branch mains at six streets functioning with the roads comprising the tram route, was referred to the Finance Committee. The letters from the Auckland Drivers' ' ..ion and the report of the Borough Engineer thereon, were referred to the Employers' Association, with a request to oppose the proposal of the Union. As recommended by the Borough Engineer, the request of the General Laborers' Union for an increase in the minimum wage was referred to next year's estimates committee to deal with. The Fire Board was informed that the Council would be pleased to discuss the question of fire hydrants as set out in the Board's letter, as soon as the Borough Engineer has submitted a report in regard to the matter. The Borough Engineer was instructed to report accordingly.

In accordance with his recommendation, the Borough Engineer was authorised to lay down one side of Devon Road from the Waiwakaiho Bridge to Sackville Street with tar macadam (using distilled tar).

In order to keep within the estimates, the Borough Engineer was instructed to employ as many as possible of the ordinary staff and teams on loan work during the ensuing six months. The Borough Engineer was instructed to report in regard to the amount expended for forage during the past half year, and also in regard to the expenditure under the heading of waterworks. The Borough Engineer was instructed to complete the work at the Reserve adjoining the Terminus Hotel at an estimated cost of £l2. A sub-committee consisting of Crs. ■""Monteatli, Collis, Burgess, and Sykes was appointed to consider the question of revising the duties of the general inspector and report.
