RECRUITING CAMPAIGN. LORD DERBY TO DIRECT IT. Received Oct. 0, 8.40 p.m London, Oct. 5. Lord Derby, at a recruiting meeting at Rossendale, said he accepted the directorship of recruiting because of his personal loyalty and friendship with Lord Kitchener. He personally advocated national service, but would do his best to make the voluntary system a success. The action of the Trades Union Congress would have the effect of putting every man on his mettle to prove the voluntary system ad.equ&te. If ultimately he considered the recruiting was unsuccessful, he would not hesitate to resign, unless other methods were adopted. SOCIALIST MANIFESTO. THERE MUST NOT BE STRIKES. Received Oct. 6, 9.30 p.m. London, Oct. C The Socialists' manifesto supporting recruiting says: "The right to strike is a priceless weapon in the hands of (Labor, but it has limitations. To strike now would be a blow levelled at our brothers in the trenches, and a corollary would be a strike by the soldiers themselves. Then God help the civilians." KILLED IN ACTION. RUDYARD KIPLING'S SON FALLS. Received Oct. C, 11.55 p.m. London, Oct. 6. Mr. Grlehton Stuart, M.P., and Mr. Rudyard Kipling's son, John, aged seventeen, who was in delkate health, and persuaded Lord Roberts to nominate him for the Irish Guards, (have both been killed in action. BONUS FOR SPELTER. London, Oct. 5. The Port of London authority is going to erect storage for an additional 00,000 bales of wool before the end of the year.
Members of the London Chamber of Commerce convened a conference of producers, manufacturers, and consumers of spelter, which passed a resolution to urge the Government to grant a bonus for not less than twenty years on spelter prooduced in Great Britain from Empire ore, and to increase the price to £23 per ton when the monthly average falls below that amount; or, as an alternative, to guarantee the capital invested.
MILITARY HOSPITAL BURNED. London, Oct. 5. The military hospital at Plymouth )ias been burned. The hospital was full of sick and wounded soldiers. There were exciting scenes, but all escaped.
