NORMANBY.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) JTlie promoters of the petition for merging the Town Board district with Hie County Council are asserting that they have a majority of the ratepayers in favor of this step. At the Town Board meeting the voting was three for merging, and two against. A meeting of ratepayers was then called to consider tiie question, and the motion in favor of merging was thirteen to twelve. A petition to take a poll for a loan of £ISOO is now being circulated, the iiawera County Council having declined to take over the district unless this loan was sanctioned. In my last notes, [ stated that one of the prime movers in favor of merging with the Hawera County was an employee of the County Council. The gentleman referred to, who is also a member of the Town Board, states that the fact that lie is an employee of the County is not influencing him in favor of merging, but lie believes that it is in the best interests of the district to amalgamate with the Hawera County Council. A public farewell to recruits who are leaving for tlve front is to be held on Wednesday evening. The following are leaving this district, making a total of over fifty who have enlisted:—Messrs. J. Holmes, Mounted Rifles; Stephen Craig, Edward Hurleiuan, Edward Gibson, !)th Reinforcements, and h Mitchell, liugler, Bth Reinforcements.

Mr. Charles Paine has been appointed honorary recruiting agent for this district, and he intends holding recruiting meetings in different centres.

A special patriotic service will be held in the Presbyterian Church, Ok&iawa, on Sunday evening next, when Mr. Templar, officer in charge of the National Reserve, will unveil a Roll of Honor of those who have left this district for the front.
