GENERAL TELEGRAMS.

REFORM AND RESCUE WORK. By Telegraph.—i Press Association. Wellington, Oct. 2. Relegates from various women's societies interested in reform and rescue work waited upon the Hon. R. McNab (Minister of Justice) to-day to ask him to present certain petitions to the House of Representatives. The deputation complained of the frequency of offences against children and the inadequacy of the punishment meted out to offenders, and asked that the law be. amended so as to provide substantial minimum penalties, particularly in the ca-se of second and third offences. Mr. McNab expressed sympathy with the objects of the deputation, but" pointed out that it was impossible for Parliament to deal with the petitions this session. | ARBITRATION COURT AWARDS. ! (ireymouth, Oct. 2. In deciding fbilt the old Watersiders' Union award of 1013 is no longer valid and that the Union Steam Ship Company had not committed a broach of such award by employing new unionists and entering into an agreement with the same, the Arbitration Court in its judgment told the union that it seems to regard an award much as the Germans regard an international treaty as a "men.- strap m' paper," binding on them if and only when it suited their own purposes, and just as the (forma u viewhad been condemned by all civilised nations as absolutely destructive of international morality and good faith, so the court thinks if Hie union's views of an award were to prevail it would be absolutely destructive, of industrial morality and good faith.
