With the arrival of the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer, Turakina, at Auckland from London next week, a new departure in connection with the sailings of the company's mail steamers will be inaugurated. ' Previously thase vessel have been calling at Capetown, Hobart, Wellington, and Lyttelton, but under the new time-table the next six steamers, of which the Turakina, is the first, will make Auckland the first port of call. The Turakina will be followed by the Riapehu, which is due at the northern port about November 7th. The expansion of Auckland's trade (savs the Auckland Herald), the shortage of tonnage, and the necessity iof economising time on the coastal run are the factors chiefly responsible lor the new arrangement.

A gathering of members of the Merchant Service Guild took place at Wellington on Friday morning for the purpose of welcoming Captain Maeindoe, the newly-appointed secretary of the guild.
