A CRISIS APPROACHING.
GERMAXS IX BELGIUM DEMORALISED. EVERY MAN TO THE FlioNT. Received Oct. 2, 5.5 p.m. London, Oct. 1. ' The Daily Telegraph's Rotterdam correspondent says that there is a thrill of joy through Belgium, whose unhappy inhabitants were never so hopeful and optimistic. The British bombardment of the coast has caused uneasiness and anxiety to the Germans behind the lines, and even the frontier guards cannot hide their depression, realising that the German official statements are lies. When the trainloads of wounded German marines were returning, the reports from German headquarters of im- [ mense captures of Anglo-French failed to stop the rot which set in, and some- | thing approaching demoralisation prevails. The German troops are in a state of extreme nervous tension throughout Belgium, indicating that the Germans realise the imminence of the crisis. Every man that cyii be spared, including those of the garrisons, lias been hastily sent to the firing line. A MOMENTOUS SITUATION. RECOGNISED BY THE IIUX. Received Oct. 2, 5.5 p.m. London, Oct. 1. The Paris press is more confident in tone, and believe that the Allies will pierce the Western front. The main difficulty accrues from stout barbed wire, which is frequently electrified. The French are now firing cutters from" their rifles. German papers insist that it is useless to minimise the importance of the struggle, but the nation is entitled to look with confidenece to the future, despite t the enemy's well-organised and well-prepared elforts.
