RACING FIXTURES. Oct. 2—Napier Park R.C. Spring. Oct. 2, 4, 9—Australian J.C. Spring., Oct. B—Hawke's Bay Hunt Meeting. Oct. 9—Hawke's Bay J.O. Spring. i Oct. 8, 9—Dunedin J.C. Spring. i TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") Napier Park to : day. ' Winners look hard to pick. ; Botanist is worth following now. ] Tangiwai is still running seconds. Patronymic pulled up lame on Saturday., 1 Old St. Bill is galloping nicely at ' Wanganui. Record Breaker is anything but appropriately named. Negative is well treated in the Hack Hurdles at' Napier. Pearlform can gallop very fast over a short course. The Australian Jockey Club's spring meeting opens at Randwick to-day. . Maniaroa paid a wonderful price at Horowhenua considering his' forward .running at Wanganui. .The Yarco filly, Limpet, with Deeley up, upset the' warm orders, Papauira and. Pearlform, in the Otaki Maiden. Gold'". Soult turned round at the -rise of the barrier in the President's Handicap at Otaki and took no part in the race. IThe New Zealand Cup candidate, Blackall, will have plenty of admirers in the big race at Napier Park to-day. Two old-timers, Bonny Helen and Expect, "came back" last week, and both rewarded their backers with handsome dividends. After running a" third and a second at Wanganui, the consistent Taringamutu went on and scored from a good field at Otaki. "Wire Tokena" has been associated with many good winners in the past, but when Mia Cara scored at Wanganui, her popular owner, Mr. W. Duncan, lad his correct name on the card. If Avondale form is any criterion, Lady Elysian should clean up the opposition at the Napier meeting. Hikahakcke had. .all the worst of the luck at Wanganui, but followers of the sturdy bay should get their money bacn with interest at any moment. Three fine sprinters. Chortle. Croesus ' and Tatterley are billed- to measure strides in the Railway Handicap. Croesus may he the most seasoned of the trio. , After winning -at Wanganui, Pf.rewanui was taken on to Otaßi and strongly backed in botli steeplechases. The big fences, however, proved too much for him. and he tired badly each start. . ;; Messrs. V. and 'R. Riddlford have a nice pair of sprinters in the full-sisters, Chakwana and Happiness, - Each scored nicely at Otaki, and the former should win many good races this season. A Wanganui clergyman made a bad 1 break the other day when he "went off" about the crowd rushing off to the local meeting instead of lining np at the station to give the. departing soldiers a cheer. This is clieftp patriotism if you like. Personally, this siiribe preferred patronising .a patriotic race meeting—all profits going to the War Fund—and cheers at a railway station, though all very well in their way, don't help the financial side of the question much! The newly drafter Finance Bill will clip totalisator dividends and stakes as follows:—"One per cent, on amount el stakes on all events. It. is to »e deducted by racing clubs and paid to the Commissioner of Stamps with sever days." Failure to send in returns and "the monisli" renders parties concemec' liable to penalties np to £2O. Divi dends will be taxed as follows: "Wliere a £1 tote is used: Is on each divident not exceeding £'2 10s; Is (id on £3 10s; 2s on £4 10s; and an additional £6 or every pound or fraction of a' pound ir excess of £4 10e." Where a 10s iot< is in operation, the tax will be as fol lows: "6d on dividends not exceeding £1 10s; Is on £2 10s; Is 6d on £3 10s 2s on £4 10s; and an additional 8d oi every pound in excess of £4 10s." Am yet the wowsers reckon racing shouh be "barred" during the war! The Australian Jockey Club's sprinj meeting, which opens at Randwick to

day, and will be continued on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday, ranks second only to the Melbourne Cup meeting in importance, and the presence of a strong

contingent of New Zealanders horses at this year's meeting invests the gathering with more than usual interest. The A.J.C. Derby conies up for decision this afternon, and judging by recent Sydney files, Wallace Isinglass is likely to be served up a warm favorite. He has shaped well this season, and is just as much at home in the wet. as on the top of the ground. Mr. Ernest Alison has Housewife eiigugpd, but she has little to recommend her chancer. The Epsom Handicap, one mile, will see Lord Multifid, Colonel Soult and other New Zealanders in action against Australia's best. Colonel Soult. in partkular, is very fit, and with orillii« I-T luck should be running prominently v* the straight. Reputation will be hopped out in the Metropolitan Handicap on Monday, in which the Wairarapa horse has 8.1*3. Fit and well he should hold his own with the handicap horses pitted against him there. Toa Tere is freely engaged at the meeting, and is doing fine trac-k work. Taking it all round, New Zca-i land prospects look very bright at Randwick. I
