A portable rifle shield, which appears to give every promise of being a most effective protection for soldiers engaged in active military operations, has been invented by Airs. 0. M. Hedbcrg, of Wellington, and Mr. W. F. G. Scott, of Auckland, and has been duly patented. The shield is of conical shape, flat at the bottom, where it clips on to the rifle by springs instantly adpated or released, and i 3 about eighteen inches in diameter. It is claimed for it that it is of extreme value cither in trench or open fighing, and that in either case it affords full and efficient protection for all the vital parts from the forehead downwards. It is constructed of steel, three-sixteenths of an inch thick, and weighs 81b, and, being made collapsible, fits into a very small compass when not Is U3e. The invention is to be offered tn the New Zealand Government and to the 3elgian Government free of charge.
