FISHING SEASON OPENS.
GOOD SPORT WITH THE BOD. The fishing season opened in Taranaki yesterday, when favorable conditions prevailed, and the large number of anglers who were out met with good sport. ' About twenty-live licenses were issued at New Plymouth, and the early hours of yesterday saw many anglers whipping the Waiwakailio at different places, while other parties visited the rivers "of the coast." As most of the sportsmen who have gone far from the town are prolonging their stay over the week-end, news of catches was scarce in New Plymouth last night, and while no specially large baskets were mentioned it was generally remarked that the first day's sport gave indications of a good season. In the Waiwakaiho, Mr. C. T. Seale landed five rainbow trout, the biggest being about Slbs, while Mr. L. B, Webster caught three raintiow trout, two of which were about 2'/ 2 lb, and tlie other slightly smaller. The first basket of the season reported at Stratford was that of Mr. Fred Collins, who landed twelve trout, averaging about a pound and a half, The prospects in the Wellington district are considered good. Brown and rainbow trout fry have been distributed in the majority of the rivers and streams, and the society's hatchery at Masterton has handled 750,000 brown ova and 2.70,000 rainbow ova. Fgr the protection of license' holders against poaching, a number of honorary rangers have undertaken the necessarv duties.
