CHRISTMAS PRESENTS FOR TROOPS.

SUBSCRIPTIONS COME IN BETTER. There was a distinct improvement yesterday in the public response to the Mayor's appeal for funds to provide Christmas, hampers (for the Taranaki soldiers at the front. The small amount received early in the week by Mr. W. J. Chaney, the treasurer of the fund, was increased yesterday to £29 lis fid, while Mr. Chaney also received a large number of parcels and has promises of other parcels, which, altogether, will make up about four large cases of sweets and other dainties. The Daily News Fund now stands at £l3 Is 6d, making the total in hand £42, 13s, which will ensure generous hampers being sent to the men. Mr. Newton Kjng has handed to Mr. Chaney the sum of £5 3s Cd, being recent'sales on account of the Christmas box for the Soldiers' Fund. One calf, donated by Mr. G. R. Rogers, Smart Road, realised 5s 6d; two stray sheep from Mr. W. B. Grant's farm, Westown, realised £1 13s, and a horse donated by Mr. John Hale, Mangorei, was bought and resold by John Hale for £1 ss, H. Marfell 10s, J. S. Connett 10s, and E. Julian £l. To'day Mr. Chaney will attend at his office, next to Messrs W. J. Shaw and Co., in Brougham Street, between 10 a.m. and 11.30 a.m., and again from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., when he will be pleased to receive further subscriptions or parcels of goods. . The public are reminded that a sacred concert is to be held at the Theatre Royal to-morrow, the whole of the proceeds to go to the fund. An excellent programme has been arranged, and an enjoyable evening's fntertainment is promised. A list of those who have subscribed to the fund will be published next week.
