BOWLING.

A PATRIOTIC GAME, Although the bowling season has not yet commenced, the spirit of patriotism moved the Fitzroy Club to throw its green open yesterday to bowlers generally in order to make a commencement i towards raising a fund that will be devoted to some good purpose in connection witli our returned soldierß, the Taranaki Bowling Centre having decided to form such a fund. Yesterday each 1 player contributed a shilling to the fund, contributions totalling £2 lis. It was a splendid afternoon for the purpose, and though a stiff breeze was blowing, the excellent shelter hedges around the Fitzroy green made play most enjoyable. There was a muster of fifty bowlers, the players for the six rinks being selected by Messrs A. Smart 'New Plymouth),, Sole (West End), and Wngle (Fitzroy). The green was playing on the dead side owing to recent rain, and as a consequence there was a large number of short deliveries during the early stages of play, but in spite of this there were some exciting heads at times ,and keen interest was taken in every rink. Afternoon tea made a pleasant break in the gome, and was much appreciated. All three of the local clubs were well represented, and the knowledge that they were in a good cause added to the afternoon's pleasure of the players. The results of the play were as follows— Healv, Billing, Morey, Sole (a), 19, v. MoGafcey, Pote, Curtis, Abbott (s). 25. Brookcr, Phillips, Dingle, Smih (a), 29, v. J. Hill, Gibson, Plumtree, Wee (s), 17. Oxenham, Waldock, J. Wood, Firih (s), 22, v. Steeds, Bellringer, Brash, Chivers (a), 26. Heel, J. Connett, Bennett, Burgess (a), IS, v. Binnie, Cotfield, Oliver, Lealand (si. 25. OPENING DATES. Next week will see the official opening of tbe game for the season in Taialiaki by two of the clubs, The opening fixtures so far arranged areT— Hawera, October 6. Stratford. October 7. Eltliaru. October 14. Piham:, 'October 20. Fitzroy, October 21. As the winter and spring have both been favorable for recuperation of the grass on the greens they are all looking in first c'ass order, only wanting a good spell of fine weather to produce that keenness which bowlers so much enjoy. The season promises to be favorable to good play. The Stratford Bowling dub held a special meeting on Wednesday evening to consider the question of liquor being allowed on the green during the season, and after a long but very amicable discussion between the supporters of the lespective position, the motion to prohibit liquor was rescinded, and there will !>e "a- woe drappie i' the bottle" on the occasion of inier-club matches as usual. It has been decided to throw the green open to all returned wounded soldiers, who wfll be welcome at the opening next week or at any time during the season.
