NEWS AND NOTES.
A man in Australia, styling himself a "saved sinner," has forwarded to the clerk of the Ashburton County Council half a crown in Australian stamps as "conscience money" for some debt he omitted to discharge before leaving New Zealand. At a meeting of the Canterbury Dairymen's Association, the following motion w'a3 carried unanimously: "That owing to the continued dry weather, the scarcity of feed, the difficulty of buying feed oven at very high prices, and the general rise in ill dairying commodities, the price of milk be not lowered this season." | Recently Oamaru fishermen had a field day, the red cod being so plentiful that at times (says the North Otago Times )the fish would be hooked before the sinker reached the bottom. As a consequence so great was the catch that many were given away to anyone who was not too "proud" to carry them homewards. Some amusing answers are given at times by school children. In a Napier school the other day the pupils were asked what a buffer" was. One little girl said it was an old cow, and another was of the opinion that it was a fat man. But the definition of a "gos3ip" capped all. The answer was "a poisonous insect." "One effect of the war will be to purify the nation," said Commissioner Hodder, of the Salvation Army, at Wanganui. His experience, even in New Zealand, was that people did not recognise the Sabbath as God's Day. "On Sunday," said the Commissioner, "we see men painting their houses, others digging their' gardens, and women on their way to play with tennis racquets and golf
'■' The health of the Maoris still remains very satisfactory" (writes the Mangonui correspondent of the Auck'and Star). "Dysentery and meaßles have been very prevalent, whilst typhoid is reported from the Herekino district. It has been computed that there have been ever 80 cases of typhoid, and 15 deaths. The staff of district nurses has a very trying and laborious time. It is to be hoped that when the weather takes up the health of the natives will improve., During the last three months the weath"r has been very wet, and the Maoris are not in the habit of changing from wet clothes into dry ones; the result is heavy colds that lower their vitality and open the way for more serious diseases." Writing from Kumara on Sunday, Mr. Clement Wragge sends the Grey Biver Argus the following:—"I hare just observed a tremendous storm in the sun 'with the special solar telescope which I with me. The main nucleus of tHis gigantic sunspot is about 40,000 miles in diameter, and the length of the entire disturbed area, which embraces a lot of smaller nuclei or satellites, is 150,000 miles. This mighty solar upheaval is sure to affect the earth 1 y wireless waves. Look out for volcanic and seismic action, particularly in the Northern Hemisphere, and an h,creasing rainfall, Especially in the Southern Hemisphere. It particularly means more rain in Australia." The Irish Tommy prisoner was feeling very wroth with the destroyers of Louvain, when a German officer dashed by on what Paddy termed a rare bit of horseflesh." "Faith, that's an Irish horse," said Paddy, and his eyes glinted maliciously at the Teutonic soldier, who had a fair knowledge of English, and at once took up the glova. They would probably have come to blows, in spite of Paddy's precarious position, had not a comoatriot of his proposed ife&t whoever could tell the biggest lie could claim the horse for his eountiv. Paddy forthwith begun t tale which was one iie from beginning to end, and stopped triumphantly. 'lhen his Teutonic opponent began, in slow, but correct, Knglish: "There was once a German gentleman " "That settles it," said Paddy, with a sigh of resignation.; "the horse is a German one!"
