HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT. By Telegraph.—'Press Association. Wellington, Yesterday. Following is the High Commissioner's cable under date London, September 25. (Note—Quotations, unless , otherwise specified, are average market prices on spot):—
Heat—Prices have declined for heavyweight mutton and lamb. Owing to the large supply, chilled beef is selling at a low rate.
Mutton.—-Canterbury 7jjd per lb for light-weight, of which there are only a few available, heavy weight 7d; other brands of mutton cannot be quoted; owes are in fair demand at 5Jd and as high as fid for very best quality.
Lamb.—Good demand. The chief feature in the market is the demand for light-weight. Canterbury BJd, heavyweight (in poor demand) 7id, second class quality light-weight 7Jd. Beef.—New Zealand beef is not quoted. Chilled hinds 6id, fore 3 sd.
Butter.—The market remains firm. Danish, slow, per ewt. 190s to 1945; Siberian 134s to 140s; Irish creamery firm, small supply, 172s to 1765, Cheese.—The market is quiet, but steady, with moderate demand for New Zealand. The output for forward delivery December-June is quoted at 795, with cost of insurance and freight 81s landed, terms of trading are quiet; Canadian, white, 70s to 775, colored 77s to 78s, fine white and colored 74s to 765; English cheddar 94s to 965; New Zealand white and colored 70s to 77s and up to 78s; Australian 72s to 745; United States 72, i to 745, good to fine fids to 70s. Hemp.—The Manila market remains firm, especially for spot and near parcels. The demand is chiefly for soft fibre new graded fair Oi-tolier-December shipment, fair current Manila '£3B 10s. The output from Manila for the week was 21,000 bales. The New Zealand market is quiet, but firm. Dominion offerings are very ;'»uli, Oetober-December shipment New Zealand good fair £33, fair £3l, spot is 10s more. Tow—Ootober-December shipments second grade £2O, third grade £l9*
Cocksfoot.—Limited business has been done with Continental seed at firm prices, Good Danish is quoted at 85s cx warehouse. / Wool.—There is no change to report. Quotations for merinos and fine crossbrcds of all grades are well maintained. Medium coarse erossbreds of all grades ire somewhat irregular. The current Bradford quotations are:—For tops, 36's, low erossbreds, 23d per lb; 40's, low erossbreds, 23Jd; 44's, medium erossbreds, 25d; 50's, halfbreds, 29d; 50's, quarterbreds, 32d; 50's, merino, 37d. Wheat.—The market is rather firmer, with more inquiry for the new crop. Canadian October-November shipment 45s 9d per quarter; American AugustSeptember Shipment 465. Oats.—The market is steady at last quotations, but there is a rather better demand.
expeditios. The Islander, a passenger and freight steamship, foundered five miles south of Juneau in August, 1900, after striking a submerged iceberg. The loss of life was heavy. The lure of her lost treasure has haunted the thoughts of coast shipping circles lever since her tragic destruction. Attempts to reach the wreck several years ago ended in failure. The last expedition, consisting of five men, left San Francisco on May Bin the schooner Wiona. It is said that /ecovery.of the treasure was made possible by the inventive genius of Mr. C. W. Dunbar, of Los Angeles, who evolved a diving bell in which he was able to reach the wreck. The Islander went down in 288 feet of water. Mr. Dunbar reports, however, that the wreck now lies at 300 feet. AN HISTORIC SUBMARINE. The submarine Holland, the first undersea craft ever owned by the United States Navy, and also the first practical submersible owned by any Government, is being scrapped at the yard of Henry A. Hitner's Sons, Philadelphia. She was purchased from what is now the Electric Boat Company in 1800. The entrance to her interior was about the size of an ordinary sewer manhole. The vessel was sold for scrapping two years ago, bringing 1076 dollars, and was towed to Camden (N.J.), where she has since been lying (states an exchange).
