'' n. rw The Defence Minister stated to-night that he had no - doubt that the 6000 men required for the Ninth Reinforcements and the two extra battalion* would be ready to go into camp in the middle of October. Th» list of men passed for swvico up to September 13 had shown an infantry shortage of 039 men on the requirements for the Ninth Reinforcements and the extra battalions, but 883 men had been awaiting medical examination at that time. The call now was for mea for the Tenth Reinforcement*, to go in£o camp early in November. Infantry and mounted infantry especiallv were wanted for that force. The Minister mentioned, in connection with recruiting, that he had been thinking of communicating with the National Reserve, the various patriotic societies and the mayors of cities and boroughs, with a view to securing thoir co-operation in an appeal to the men. He did not- want to overdo the matter at that stage,' bat men were wanted in large numbers.
