FATALITY AT PATEA.

BOAT SWAMPED ON BAR. TARANAKI RESIDENT DROWNED. A sad boating accident occurred at the Patea Heads at about 3.30 p.m. on Sunday, resulting in the death of Mr. Angus Mcintosh MacLeod, a recent arrival in the district. It appears that a party of five, including the deceased, his brother, Mr. Robert MacLeod, of Eltham, and Messrs N. Tinney and J. Hulbert, Jnr., two local residents, went for a row in an open boat. When just beyond the eastern wall a breaker caused the boat to ship a quantity of water, and while this was being baled out another breaker filled the boat, swamping it. The occupants jumped into the water (which was up to their waists), and a roller overturned the boat. The party called for the life Une, but could not be heard, and those on shore did not realise the danger. The men then pushed the boat shorewards, but soon got into deep water in the channel. All except Tinney swam for the shore, deceased being given a grating. Tinney clung to the boat and was carried over the bar, but retained his hold, subsequently righting it. At this juncture, Mr. W. Glenny galloped for the Harbor Board's launch* which was speedily got under way and proceeded at racing speed to the scene of the disaster, in charge of Captain Tinney. Meanwhile, however, Mr. ip. Tinney had jumped into a boat and rowed to the rescue of his brother who was quite helpless, there being no oars in the boat that had overturned. The launch on reaching the scene searched for the missing man for some time and then towed the large boat ashore, the smaller one having to be cast adrift and was picked up later. No sign was seen of the unfortunate victim who had, it is surmised, been seized with cramp and suddenly sank. The deceased was 36 years of age and was a native of Invercargill. Deceased was an ex-resident of Eltham, Inglewood, and Opunake. He was a prominent figure in Caledonian circles; and won numerous piping events. He has also been successful in dancing competitions, ... .„ ~!■ He married a daughter of Mr. F. Des Forges, of Opunake, who survives him, with a family of seven young children, i tor whom the greatest sympathy is felt m their sudden bereavement.
