THE NATIONAL PERIL.
(To the Editor Taranaki Daily News.) Sir,—Although I have for some time past been a supporter of your paper, yet, if you write many more articles such as that you published on Saturday last, I snail cease to be one. You do not put tue n<atter fairly, and such articles are intended to make those of us who w.sli to stay at home feel a little uncomfortable . Is it the duty, or is it wise, of a paper to make its readers uncomfortable? I may say that my parents are comfortably off, and, of course, I, too, nad an easy life. Now, why should I leave my easy life to undergo such hardships as must be undergone by those that go a-soldierjng Besides, I might get hurt. You say that our property might become the property of the Germans! JTow could that be? We are English and the Germans have no right to come hers, and if they did and we could prow that not one of our family (although we are all strong young fellows), did a hand's turn to oppose them, and gave as sparingly as we could possibly do to any funds to help the cause of the Germans' enemies, would we not be treated with the utmost consideration and be allowed to keep what we have? And we are not alone. There are scores like us. Wc don't want compulsion. We arc Socialists, I think, in our opinions about the war. Let those poor beggars who are accustomed to hardships go to the war. Let those what have nothing to lose fight for those that have something! To ask tliosp of us that have something to protect, ami that is what you in your wretched article have done, is to ask too much. Leave us to enjoy what we have. Don't write in that strain again, or i shall, cease to be A SUBSCRIBER. Stratford, Sept..-25, 1915
