An arrival at Wellington on Wednesday from New York, via Panama Canal, was the chartered steamer Suruga. The vessel, which came on behalf of the Barber. Line, experienced particularly heavy weather. Departure was taken from Now York on August 8. To the Canal the voyage was uneventful, but slips in the Culebra Cut caused the ship to be delayed. Clearing the Canal, the Suruga ran into heavy weather, and this gradually increased until on September 10 a violent hurricane was encountered. Those on board had a most trying time, and the vessel was hove-to for about nine hours. Gale after gale was met, but the Suruga behaved well, making good headway. Two days ago another violent southerly gale caused the vessel to be hove-to for eight hours, during which time huge seas continually broke over the vessel. Throughout the whole voyage the Suruga stood the tests very well, and made her. appearance in port apparently little the worse for the severe buffeting. On one occasion one of the ship's pets (a monkey) was washed overboard, but was fortunately rescued when another big sea swept over the vessel. '
