PROPOSAL TO FORM A REGIMENT. By Telegraph.—'Ptcss Association. Palmerston N., Last Night. An enthusiastic meeting of delegates was held here to-day to discuss the proposal to form a Scottish Regiment to go to the fnmt. The following delegates were present: Messrs J. Mackav (Takapau), W. Oliphant (Auckland)', Charles Brown (Christehurch), W. H. Kilgonr (Dunedin), W. Gillespie (Masterton), Alexander Reid' (Mangatainoka), T. 8. Arcus (Waimarino), R. W. Raeburn (Ohakune) W. G. Murray, D. Moir, H. A. Martin, and W. Ferguson (Rangitikei), A. H. Ross (Dannevirke), J. Collingwood, E. H. McCloud, and D. McLean (Feilding). , Mr. Gillespie said the idea of the meeting was that they should go wholeheartedly for the formation of a Highland Regiment, similar to that of Canada. One hundred and thirty-five circulars had been sent out to the leading Scottish Societies from Auckland to the Bluff, nearly all had replied in favor of a regiment being formed. It was decided that a conference consisting of the united Caledonian, Scottish, and Highland Societies in New Zealand, and representing the united Scottish interests in the dominion, wait upon the Minister of Defence, with a request that a kilted regiment, to be known as the "New Zealand Scottish," be equipped and despatched on active service forthwith.
The following were appointed a deputation to wait upon the Minister at 12.30 p.m. on Tuesday nest:—Messrs W. Gillespie, H. Martin, R. Reid, Chas, Brown, Sir Walter Buchanan, W. McKee, J. M. Mackay, A. T>. Crawford, H. JJorrison, and Sir James Carroll.
