THE ARMIES OF EUROPE.
THEIR WORT BROUGHT HOME TO US. AN EVENING'S UNIQUE INSTRUC, TION. That the people of New Plymouth are permeated with ardent patriotism iras amply demonstrated last night, when a series of pictures dealing with the war attracted a well-fillod house, those present taking an absorbing interest in the whole of the programme. Like the proceedings at a festive gathering, |he pictures began witTT "The King," the assemblage all rising as the strains of the National Anthem rose from tlie orchestra. Then came a succession of animated pictures showing the troops of the various nations engaged in the war (except the Austrians), the London Scottish, Naval Brigade, and Indians evoking prolonged cheers. Some graphic and pathetic scenes were screened depicting the terrible havoc inflicted in Belgium, and the methods adopted to feed the starving people of that unfortunate country. Coming nearer the realities of war were scenes in the trenches, on the march, and numerous incidents connected with actual warfare, such as the devastating effect of shell explosions, and troops and guns in action. After a brief glimpse of the German Navy and Kiel Canal, the British fleet was shown, great interest being taken in the torpedo boats and destroyers. The series included several views of ambulance work, including the actual bandaging of wounded patients, but fortunately this gruesome part of the programme was commendably brief. Apart from this the entertainment was evidently enjoyed by the spectators, who also had the advantage of having the views explained by the actual photographer. Some patriotic songs by Mr. Rowe helped to afford an agreeable diversion for the eye strain, and evoked great applause, to which the singer responded with encores, a section of the audience joining in the choruses. The appreciation shown by last night's patrons should certainly be sufficient evidence of the merits of the pictures, and should ensure a large attendance at the matinee this afternoon and at the final screening to-night.
