STRATFORD.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, Monday. The "Dardanelles" Patriotic Market was again a great success on Saturday. Mesdames Sangster and McQuay were the ladies in charge, and had a very busy afternoon and evening, selling provisions and dispensing afternoon tea and suppers. Mr, Roger's orchestra and Mr. H. A. Fox gave musical items, which were greatly appreciated. The takings amounted to £27. Next Saturday the market will be again opened, this time by Mr. Skoglund, and the object is to obtain funds to purchase Christmas gifts for our boys at the front. The object ie such a worthy one that it is certain to be well patronised.

The builders have made a start with the erection of the new studio for Mr. J. McAllister, opposite the Loan Company's premises in Broadway North. Mr. Geo. Griffin, who was formerly in the employ of Hallenstein Bros.' Stratford branch, and has been for some time with the same firm at Whangarei, was in town today, looking up old friendß. He has responded to the call and enlisted, and hopes to leave for camp with the next draft of reinforcements.

Mr. T. Brown has disposed of his business to Mr. A. F. Cuff, who takes possession on October 1.

The County bridge staff have just completed the erection of a ferro-con-crete bridge over the Patea River on the Cardiff Road. The bridge is of 40 feet span, and has been built under the direction of the County Engineer, and reflects great credit on him.

The Kuku Dairy Company (Whangamomona) is starting operations for the season on October 1.

A Whangamomona farmer mentioned to-day that, despite Mr. Mapsey's statemerit made in the House some days ago that the farmers were paid 40s per 1001b for their beef, and also had the hide and fat besides, last season he was paid 38s per 100, and was informed by the meat works to whom he consigned the cattle that no allowance was made for the hide and fat.

Is it bad or good news? The Stratford County Council have received advice that the Order-in-Couneil, authorising the erection of a toll gate near Waipuku has been signed, and that the council may proceed with the work. Consequently the County bridge gang are starting tomorrow morning with the erection of the house and toll gate, so in a short time the toll gate will be an accomplished fact.
