REPORTED RiUSSIAN DEFEAT. Amsterdam, Sept. 17. An Austrian communique says:—We took prisoner 1900 men southward of Zolocza. The Russians advanced on the western bank of the Ikwa near Novo Porjajew, but were driven to the east basic and suffered heavily from our artillery's flanking fire. BATTLE AT THE SEKE7TH. Petrograd, Sept. 17. The Russians on the Sereth completely encircled the 3rd and 4th German divisions. The latter fought like lions and preferred death to surrender. An officer of the Guards, though suspended on the points of Russian bayonets, continued firing his revolver until he expired.
GERMAN ARMY'S DESPERAITE CONDITION. ! Paris, Septr 17. A letter found on a German soldier killed in Poland states that the losses sustained by the Germans were frightful. The dead before Warsaw could be counted by thousands. "We have endured," he says, "one winter campaign in Russia, but never again. We were told that we should not have to go beyond Warsaw, tat the pursuit continues. The morale of the men is not very good, owing to the great losses. Deserters and jailbirds are put to work on poison gas reservoirs, which is very dangerous work. If they refuse, their brains are blown out. The Bavarians seldom take prisoners; instead they stab them to death."
