"19, 10 a.m. Sydney, Sept. 18. the Chief Justice, speaking at a sendoff to university, law, and school men who are going to the front, said: "Wo aie still threatened with the horrible risk, not ol defeat, but of this prouil Empire being forced to acquiesce in an irglorious and fallacious peace, such a peace that .will leave all its powers of mischief to a Power knowing no scruple. It will be a peace guaranteed only by a treaty with a nation that knows no tieaty. Heaven protect our Empire trom the puling pacificist who, in spite of the horrors for which the enemy has been responsible, can still be too proud to fight. The present position is analogus to that of the early American settiers, who had, every man, to be prepared to light and escape destruction by savages. Such circumstances are not needed for compulsion; they should inspire men to the supreme duty of protecting the community.
