The Rev. R. J. Campbell's resignation has been accepted, and ho was warmly thanked. He will probably join the Anglican. Church after his work in France, and become associated with the Bishop of Birmingham. He will devote his leisure to literary work. His book on "The New Theology" was withdrawn from circulation two months ago. BRITAIN'S DRINK BILL. London, Sept. 10. Britain's drink bill for the June halfyear was eighty-eight millions, an increase of £8,000,000. Temperance people deplore the seriousness of drinking by women. CANADIAN WHEAT SURPLUS. Ottawa, Sept. 16. Official estimates show that Canada's exportable surplus wheat will be two hundred million bushels. Sydney, Sept. 17. The Government will cease the purchase of wheat from farmers on September 30. The Commodities Commission fixed the retail price of pork at Is, and raised the price of bacon one penny. Brisbane, Sept. 17. The main business portion of St. George has been destroyed by fire. Fifteen buildings were destroyed, and the damage is estimated at £50,000. A proclamation has been issued bringing fodder under the Control of Trade Act. Perth, Sept. 17. The select committee on horse racing has filed an interim report recommending immediate legislation to stop street and shop betting, and giving powers of arrest. Melbourne, Sept. 17. The Federal Executive has'authorised the increased telephone rates, and they" will tako effect from Decembor 10. . Hobart, Sept. 17. The Electoral Bill Committee reported in favor of the number of members of the Assembly being increased from thirty to thirty-one, in order to make an odd number. Melbourne, Sept. 17. The High Court delivered judgment in the conspiracy case, Arthur Kidman and others. Tho full bench of six judges held that the indictment waß of value in cummin law, but five dissented from the Chief Justice's opinion that under Hit constitution a Jaw could not be passed after an act had been committed and tho declaration of the person who committed it would make him guilty of a crime and liable to punishment,
