DISTRICT NEWS.

OPUNAKE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) On Monday evening, Mr. McDavitt was fafewelled by his friends in Opunake town and district. Mr. Dudley presided. A presentation of a purse of sovereigns was made by Mr. M. J. Brennan. On behalf of the Catholic Church choir, Mr. Sam Fcavcr presented Mr. McDavitt with a gold mounted fountain pen, he having been choir master for some nineteen years. .Mr. McDavitt thanked his friends for the token of remembrances and said he was sorry at leaving Opunake, but he had no family ties in Opunake and he was leaving for Morrlnsville, where he will be associated with his eldest son.

Mr. and Mrs. C. Sorrensen were welcomed home on Monday night by a large number of friends. Toasts and musical items formed a very pleasant evening's entertainment. An ample supply of good things was prepared for" the attendants.

There is likely to be some noise made over the new postal regulation that is to come into force next month. The proposal is to close the outgoing mails at 7 p.m., instead of 10 p.m. The funeral of the boy Charles Henry Morris, who was accidentally drowned in a creek above the Te Kiri sawmill, tooK place on Wednesday at the Opunake cemetery.

Much sympathy is felt in Opunake for Mr. W. McXeill who lias lost his wife, the sad event occurring very suddenly on Tuesday morning. Two young children are left without a mother's care. Deceased was the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs.' C. Humphries, of Te Xamu road.

There is likely to be further developments in connection with the spite shown to a local solicitor.

Mr. Stranger has taken over Mr. McDavitt's practice.
