IN NEW GUINEA.
A WELL-CONCEIVED SCHEME UPSET Received Sept. 15, 5.5 p.m. Melbourne, Sept. 15. Private advices Show that the Ger< man attempt to recapture Rabaul was more formidable than was supposed. All the Germans were at liberty on parole, which they appear deliberately to have violated. The most careful preparations for rebellion were made. Stores of rifles, ammunition, and large quantities of dynamite were discovered. Germans' houses were secretly connected by telephone. Systematic attempts were made to stir up the natives against the British. The plot was discovered only just in time to prevent a general ilslng. All the Germans were yarded up. When the proofs of treachery were disclosed the authorities appear to have acted with promptitude and efficiency.
