THE NEW HOSPITAL.
•■-'" o SCHEME TO BEAUTIFY GROUNDS. A plan setting out the ways in which the grounds around the new hospital at New Plymouth could be beautified was placed before the Taranaki Hospital and Charitable Aid Board yesterday morning by the architect, Mr. F. Messenger. T.he plan provides for a sweeping; asphalt drive from the gates to tile entrance of the hospital, the drive to be bordered by trees and plots of (lowers, while the open space in front of the hospital is to he asphalted, the asphalt to be relieved here and there by flower beds. In the open spaces between the different buildings there will be lawns and flower beds, while at the bach the hospital will be surrounded by trees. Messrs S. Percy Smith" and W. W. Smith were asked to oiler suggestions for the modeling of the grounds, and they reported:—"The plan as sketched by the architect for the modelling of the grounds, is excellent. We, therefore, have not much to add to the plan. The alterations and additions which \vc have made will, we think, be an improvement, and will considerably lessen the expense of the upkeep of the grounds in future. We would suggest that all the corners of the building, under the windows, etc,, should be planted with low-growing, compact, flowering shrubs. ' Such effect would harmonise with the heavy ferroconcrete and brick walls of the line building. The area to be planted with tree ferns would have exceptionally line effect when viewed from the top of the bank. The half-dozen puriri trees sag gesled to be planted along the front would also have a striking effect, and latei could be utilised for shaded seals."
