VIOLENT RUSSIAN ATTACKS.
ENEMY CLAIMS SUCCESS. Received Sept. 13, 11.10 p.m. Amsterdam, Sept. 13. An Austrian communique states: We have crossed the Goryn near Derajno. Russian attacks near Tarnopol have increased in violence. The enemy northwards of Tarnopol penetrated our trenches and occupied Dolzan'ka. German and Honved battalions hurrying up caught the enemy on ibotli flanks and recaptured Dolzanka, throwing back the enemy from the bridgehead positions. The enemy's losses were heavy. We captured the stronglyentrenched village of Skuraty, near Skuraty, near Kosowo. IN SOUTH-EAST GALICIA. RUSSIANS CONTINUE SUCCESSFUL. Received Sept. 13, 9.55 p,m, ' x Petrograd, Sept. 13. A further communique says:—The German advance on the Dvinfik roads continues. After a stubborn engagement with a superior force between Wilkonair and Uciany we fell back to the lake Dusiaty district. The enemy are determinedly attacking along the right bank of the Vilica, and are advancing towards Podbrodze railway station. We continue to hold them. Fierce fighting continues in the Skidel district. Prisoners describe the Germans as being excessively fatigued by the recent fighting, and their losses in the past three days, in killed alone, have been one hundred per company. We captured, north of Tarnopol 91 officers and 4200 men, nine machineguns, and much booty. We repulsed the enemy, inflicting enormous losses. Armored motor cars, dashing to the front of the enemy's defences, remained, pouring in a stream of bullets, Southward of Tarnopol we assumed the offensive, and captured many Austrians during the pursuit from Tlust to the Dneister. Altogether the execution of our general plan is daily improving our position. RUSSIAN REPORTS. POSITION IMPROVING. Received Sept. 13, 8.55 p.m. Petrograd, Sept. 13. A communique states:—While continuing to hold the enemy we have slightly withdrawn on the Niemen front. Wc repulsed desperate attacks on the Lower Zelvianka, and destroyed a battery at Zelva, where the Germans developed a most violent fire. Tlwy were attacking throughout Saturday on the Baranowiczy road. The enemy in the Rovno region has been reinforced, and is continuing the offensive in Deralijno district, but .we are holding his attacks. We constantly repulsed the Austrians in the Upper Goryn, with great losses. HOLDING THE ENEMY. EFFECT OF GALICIAN SUCCESSES. INCREASING OPTIMISM IN RUSSIA. Times and Sydney Sun Services. Received Sept. 13, 5.25 p.m, London, Sept. 12. The Times' correspondent at Petrograd says:—The recent Russian victories immensely modify the fears regarding Kieff and the south-west provinces generally. The prospect of a' further enemy advance in this theatre is contemplated without tin slightest apprehension. Their likelihood of reaching Rovno is admitted, but further progress will be increasingly difficult while the Russian offensive ability in Galicia affords reliability that the pledged attempt to outflank us from the direction of Rovno will bo countered in good time. Meanwhile the enemy are mainly concerted to keep us occupied in the Rovno and Dubno regions, in order to prevent us following up the Galician successes which have already forced the enemy to retire from the direct routes to the Dn'eiper and postpone their operations in that direction. The effective repulse of the German naval attack in the Baltic confirms the impression that the German naval organisation is far inferior to that of the land forces, and strengthens tie confidence in the Russian navy to defeat any attempts at landing. GERMAN COMMANDER DISMISSED. Received Sept. 13, 8.55 p.m. Amsterdam, Sept. 13. The Kaiser has dismissed General von Kluege, whom he held responsible for the Austro-German check on the Sereth. LIE FACTORY BLUNDERS. London, Sept. 12. A French official wireless message points out that the Walff Agency, at 4 p.m. on September 8, denied the official Petrograd statement announcing the defeat of two German divisions, 'but the Russian statement was not issued until 11 p.m. This premature denial informed Europe of the Russian success eight hours in advance. GERMAN OFFICIAL REPORT. Amsterdam, Sept. 12. Fighting has developed between the Dwina and Merecz on a greater scale than hitherto. General von Mindenburg captured ISOO prisoners. Obstinate fighting between the Je.siori and the Niemen lasted all day and all night. The Russians ceased their resistance at davfbreak. The pursuit is proceeding. We broke the enemy's lines at several points at Zelwianka, capturing 1050. Wc attacked and repulsed a Russian Guard regiment north-west ol Vilna.
