Private advice has been received from Auckland that the condition of the Hon. J. A. Millar, M.L.C., is critical. Mr. E. W. Rhodes, of the New 'Plymouth Magistrate's Court staff, has received notice of transfer to the Supreme Court OiHee at Wellington. Constable Willets, who has been itetionedi in Wanganui for a couple of years (says the Chnoniole) has/ been transferred to Hawera. • Sergeant Albert Joseph Downing, reported killed in the Dardanelles, wai a noted 'Rugby j>layer, who went to Australia and America. Mr. A. W. Ogle has been appointed first tester to the.Bell Block, Warea, Tikorangi, and Frankley Road Dairy Factories. A telegram from Christchureh announces the death of Mr. John McLachlan, formerly member for Ashburton, at the ago of 75. The casualty lists received last' night . contain the name of Lieut. W. K. S. t Furby, of Stratford, who has received a gunshot wound in the right knee. Cable advice was received yesterday that Trooper Edmond 1a Malone, eldest son of the late Colonel Malone, has arrived at Connaught Hospital, Alder, shot, England. Information has been received of the death of Mr, A. Henderson, at the Dardanelles. ■ Deceased was a son of Mrs. F. Henderson, of Inglewood, and a brother of Mr. E, Henderson. Messrs. W. Okey, Noel Harding, T. E. Reynolds, and Walter Turnbuil returned from the front to New, Plymouth by last night's mail train. A large crowd assembled at the station to greet them, , but there was no function. Mr. E. -C, Clayton, engineer to the New Plymouth Borough Council, is confined to his house with influenza. Councillors S. J. Smith and A. E. Watkins were absent from last nighty meeting of the Council owing to illness. Mr. F. W. lierdman (a brother 01 tne Hon. A, L. Herdman), manager of the Hamilton branch of Messrs. Dalgety and Co., Ltd,, has been appointed to the management of the Wanganui branch of the same Arm. Mrs. Luxford has received the following cable message from her husband, Chaplain-Major J. A. Luxford (who lost . a leg as the result of wounds received at flallipoli), dated Alexandria, September ">: ''Leaving for England bv hospital ship to-day. Doing splendidly.'' Private L. 11. Ranald Martin, reported killed in the Dardanelles, was the only son of George 11. S. Martin, of the Union Steamship Company, Ltd., Wellington. He was descended from a well-known military family, being the grandson of the late Major J. R. Martin, Royal Avlillerv, India; anil a great grandson of the late Sir .James Ranald Martin, 'Physician to the Indian Council and a noted Army surgeon, lie was also a near relative of the late Field-Marshal Sir Donaiit -:tirtin Stewart, Commander-in-Chief of India. Private Martin was one of the first to join the main body of the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces. Private J. Moller, 11th Tnranaki Regiment (son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Moller, Olakeho), Trooper Hartley, N.Z. Mounted Hides (New Plymouth), and Private S. Taylor (lltli Tnranaki Regiment, son of Mr. J. 0. Taylor, Inglewood, and formerly of Ilurlcyville, all of whom returned to Xew Zealand by the Tahiti, were W«t< eomed at the Hawera railway station on Sunday night by a large crowd. The Mayor, in a brief speech, gave the returned soldiers a very hearty welcome home, specially mentioning Private Moller. He said they were all glad see Private Moller home again, and they were all filled with admiration and gratitude for the magplflcent manner in ' which ho had performed his duty in the defence of his country and the Empire. (Applause). This was not a time for long speechmaking, but he would like to say that the citizens appreciated in the highest degree the way in which New Zealand boys had given their service ■to their country.
