BACK BLOCK MAIL FACILITIES. Settlers on the other side of Mt. Messenger are a great deal exercised in mind over the possibility of the present daily mail service between Waitara and Awakino being/reduced next winter to a tri-weekly /or bi-weekly service. Tenders are now being called for the alternate services. The settlers have had the daily service for three years now, and it has proved a veritable boon, making life in the back districts worth living, keeping as it has ail closely in touch with the affairs of the outside world. They v/ouid sacrifice a great deal rather than back to the old order of things, and naturally they look upon the suggested change with considerable apprehe&v.' n. Petitions praying the Post'iiustci General to continue the daily service are now in circulation, and it is to be is <incd the prayer will be acceded to. 'Phi- voa-l over MO. Messenger is always very bad in winter, and the contractors in the nasi have only maintained the service at great, difficulty and cost. The •Public Works Department is improving (he road, but it is a slow process, and the Government could not do a greater service than give this national road work their close attention and make it fit for traffic in summer and winter. The Govoninic!)> should not penalise the district that is already laboring under serious disabilities by reverting to the old mail i arrangement!', but continue the present very satisfactory service.
