NATIONAL SERVICE. WOMEN EAGER FOR WORK. Received Sept. 11, 5.5 p.m. London, Sept. 10. The Bishop of Birmingham presided at a women's meeting at the Surrey theatre. It was resolved.that the time had arrived when every fit man should be made available for home service or the firing line; alao that women's services should be fully utilised. PETITION FROM COMMONERS. Received Sept. 12, 3.10 p.m. London, Sept. 11. It is understood that twenty Unionist and twenty Liberal members of the House of Commons have memorialised Mr. As<|uith in favor of national service. GREAT CITIZEN ARMY IN THE FIELD. Received Sept. 13, 12.53 a.m. London, Sept. 12. The Observer, remarking that a majority of the Cabinet committee inquiry.has reported in favor of national service, suggests that if tlie Government as a whole does not support that view as a rule, the collective responsibility should bo relaxed and every member will then bear his own moral responsibility for expressing his 'personal conviction. The Observer also says that a grc/.t citizen army is in the field. However varied their past political opinions, members are becoming almost unani--1 mously in favor of national service. This is required far less for its immediate military advantage than the effect upon tho wliole industrial organisation for war.
