GERMAN FOOD STORTAGE.
The question of fooil shortage was recently much discussed in the German press, and a very outspoken article appeared in the Yossische Zeitung from the pen of Dr. Kuezynski, head of the Selionberg statistical department, and a very well-known economist. After careful enquiry, Dr. Kuezynski came to the conclusion that Germany's potato supply would peter out at the end of May or the beginning nf June. On December Ist., 1914, Germany had 2,000,000 calves under three months", 1,000,000 bulls and oxen, .11,000,0011 cows, 0,0(10,000 calves, under six months to two years, with a total (load weight of -3.000.000 tons, the average yearly consumption in Germany is 1,250,000 tons, but of course if the cows are .sacrificed there will be no milk. I'iirthennore, the oxen are needed now in the country to do the work of horses, so that they cannot possibly be spared for food purposes. So far as swine are concerned, the situation is much more serious. Germany possessed on December Ist. 12,000,000 pig's under six months old, and 5,000,000 over that age—a total dead weight of 500,000 tons, while the yearly consumption was 2,250,000 tons, so that if every pig were killed to-day the meat wouid only last three months. The professor is very pessimistic about the outlook ,and his only suggestion is to economise on meat and still more on potatoes until the next potato harvest,
