COTTON AS CONTRABAND. A TALE FROM THE FATHERLAND. (Times and Sydney Sun Services.) London, September 5. A German wireless states that the declaring of cotton as contraband of war is of no military importance. Germany has a sufficient supply to last the army for yiears. Le Temps, commenting on the official information that Germany is sending 300,000 men monthly to the different fronts to make up the wastage, says it is idle to speculate how long Germany will be able to keep up the supply of reserves, because it is not known how many she intends to mobilise, but we believe the figures. surpass all previous estimates, because Germany will finally sai-rilico children of sixteen and men of sixty. Apparently Germany is already embarrassed by the lack of men. for since the great offensive on Russia, Germany's losses have increased to such proportions that she is unable to make good with reserves and has either called out or is about to call out every possible man. At the present moment Germany is incorporating the final classes of the second band of t'hc Lamistnrm, forty-three to forty-live, and also the I'JJti class. She still has the 1917 class, and is also inspecting youths of the 1918 class. FAILURE OF FOOD PILLS. Paris, September 5. A German company formed to manufacture food pills for soldiers, each equal to a meal, has gone bankrupt, after spending several millions of Government money.
