DISTRICT NEWS.
TARIKI. (From Our Own Correspondents.) Mr. Walter Laurence has received telegrams from the Premier notifying him that lias son William was wounded and is in the hospital at Malta. Letters have been received from Messrs E. James, thicker, Reed and Laurence from All speak in liigh terms of the conditions and food, and though they have plenty or work to do, are having a really good time. The ladles of tlie Patriotic Committee last injunction to them was that they were to write for anything they might require. Mr. 12. James, in a letter to one of the meiifbers, on behalf of himself and mates, thanks the committee for the presents made to them, but says they require nothing further, everything being provided that they] need. There was a good attendance at the ladies' sewing bee on the 4th inst. Commencing at 11 a.m. and working till 5 p.m., a good day's work was put in, making nightingales, etc., for the wounded. On Thursday next a "daffodil" afternoon and evening has been arranged, and the work done will be on view, which in itself should be a draw. The admission in the afternoon will be free (afternoon tea 6d), and a modest "bob" will admit anyone in the evening, when there will be musical items, competitions, supper and other attractions. Complete details of the recent mock trials are not yet available, as several "criminals" who were not present at court are being looked up by our hon. secretary, who repefrts that 'all he has interviewed so far have pleaded guilty and paid np their fines. A patriotic working bee will be held on Thursday. .September fl. Those wishing lo participate can obtain particulars from Mr. 10. C'rossinan, lion. sec. retarv. or Mr. W. X. Stephenson, chairman of the Tariki Patriotic Committee. PUNIHO-WAREA. The game of draughts is a very popular one in this district, and during the winter a number of tournaments were arranged. The first was between Warea and Newall Road. The former proved somewhat easy victors, winning two matches : out of three. i ■ The second tournpm.-nt was between i Warea and Puniho, awd this resulted in | many hard-fought and close games. The I teams were five aside, each playing one | " aI »Q with the members of t.iie other i Uam. Three games were to be played, | but a fourth was found necessary. The 1 first resulted in a win for Puniho by I one game, 11 to 10. The second was I Avon by Warea, by 11 games to !), but i the third meeting resulted in a draw, I 10 games all. The fourth match was played last Friday evening at the Warea Hall, when Puniho secured the laurels and thus won the tournament, the result of this match being Puniho 12 games, Warea 10. All the matches were interesting, and were voted very enjoyable . by all who took part. At the conclusion of the final game thfe wish was generally expressed that many further games would be played next season. Some of the players were:—Warea: W. Lawn, C. Julian", R. Julian, C. Corbet, H. Clarke. Puniho: P. Rowe, L. Wells, A. Rowe, W. Thomas, A. Roberts, and Hillman.
