STRATFORD.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, Yesterday. 'Mr. E, Viekevs, of Midhirst, has received a cable informing him that his son, Private E. Vickers, who left with the Fifth Reinforcements, died of dysentry on August 25. The deceased was educated at the Stratford school, and was a bright lad, and his death will be regretted by all.
Miss Bell Mercer has been awarded the gold medal presented by the Sisters of the Convent for the pupil securing the highest marks at the musical examinations.
Enthusiasts in bee-keeping are holding a meeting this evening to form a local branch of the New Zealand Bee-keepers' Association.
The unsightly building near office, that was partially burnt some months ago, is being pulled down. The Railway Department intend fencing the site in.
The amount of cargo that is pilfered in a year must amount to an enormous sum. To-day, a Stratford retailer showed "your own" a case supposed to be full of confectionery, but which, instead, was hardly half full. The pilfering must have taken place somewhere between Wellington and New Plymouth. It lis perhaps well to remind young people that all males between 14 and 25 years must register their names with the Defence Department. This regulation has been fairly well carried out, but there are always some shirkers. Consequently the department has issued prosecutions against two local lads for failing to register. Constable Bleasel is on annual leave, and intends visiting the north. The quarterly meeting of the Stratford Licensing Committee takes place on Friday at noon.
