STRATFORD.
Stratford, Saturday. i'or several days past fchore has been a young man pamading the town in uuiform. Lieutenant Gray ospied him, and, insisting on seeing his papers, found that he had been discharged from the forces. The Lieutenant gave him half an hour to change into civilian clothes, which was promptly done. The Fire Brigade has sent 10 of its members to the front. (Private Kennedy was the first from the quota to fall. The new.s of Sergeant Dpwar's death at the front caused quite a shock to those who knew him well. Mr. Dewar waa formerly in the employ of Mr. Bert Harkness, and captained the Stratford senior team for three seasons. He also represented New Zealand in the football field, and was a member of the team that visited America and Australia. The fire bells sounded an alarm this afternoon, and people rushed in hundreds to Juliet Street, expecting to see a big blaze, but were disappointed. An outbreak in a wash-house at the rear of a house occupied by Mr. T, D. Colson was the cause of the alarm. The damage was slight. It seems a pity that the New Plymouth branch of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals have not a local committee acting in conjunction Wiith them in this district. There is plenty of work for such a committee, and "your own" feels sure that there are ladies and gentlemen here who would willingly act if they were approached by the parent body. The eases of cruelty which have occurred recently in these parts make one feel that such a committee is an absolute necessity. Will the society make a move in the matter?
