AWAITING THE LEAD. '.UIS. BRYAN'S PRO-GERMAN VIEWS. Times and Sydney Sun Services. London, August 24. The Times' correspondent in Washington says that Mr. Bryan has issued a statement deprecating war on the ground that a few reckless citizens who insist 011 using belligerent vessels ought not to he allowed to drag the country into complications. The nation is calmly awaiting the President's lead. This is evident from the sparseness of editorial comment and tho restraint shown in the Washington .dispatches, which reiterate the forecasts that diplomatic relations musit be broken off if Germany is unable to justify her action. There is widespread speculation as to President Wilson's action in the event of a rupture. The impression prevails that he will summon Congress and submit a programme of military preparedness, the details of which' are examined at length. New York, August 24. Mr. Bryan has appealed in the newspapers to Americans not to travel in British vessels during the war. BY SECRET WIRELESS. GERMAN OFFICIALS WORRIED. Received August 25, 10.20 p.m. Washington, August 25. The .Providence Journal publishes evidence, which is secured by a secret- wireless installation listening to German wireless messages through Hayville, to the effect that the German Embassy is concerned at the attempt to destroy Canadian bridges, to originate strikes in the United States, and otherwiso interjfere with American neutrality. ( COTTON AS CONTRABAND, j A FORMAL PROTEST. ' ; London, August 24. Router's Washington correspondent says the American Note on neutral trade will probably be redrafted owing to the declaration of cotton as contraband. It is understood that the Note will formally protest against the declaration. A long diplomatic correspondence is likely to follow.
