EDUCATION BOARD.

THE MONTHLY MEETING. The Taranaki Education Board met yesterday. Present: Messrs H. Trimble (chairman), A. Morton, E. Marfell, A. H. Halcombe, F. Mackay, A. M. Bradbury, R. Masters, G. A. Adlam and the Rev. A. B. Chappell, OVERSEER'S REPORT. The overseer reported;— Douglas.—The new class-room and general improvements were completed on August 3. Cardiff—(Scullery, removal of washhouse, drainage, painting and general repairs at the residence; and general repairs, including new entrance gates at the school, were completed. Whilst at Cardiff my attention was drawn to the unsatisfactory light and ventilation of the school. Rowan.—The painting repairs to the inside of the school and general repairs have been attended to. Mahoe.—The painting of the inside and general.repairs were also attended to at this school. Agricultural Classes, Stratford.—The building to accommodate these classes is well on towards completion. 'Bell Block.—The partition to divide the class-room is being attended to this week, also the inside painting of the school. ■ The report was adopted. TEMPORARY APPOINTMENTS. The chairman reported that lie had made the following temporary appointments:—Kina, Miss Hunt, sole teacher; Tarata, Miss Dempster, assistant; Tikorangi, Miss Rowlands, assistant; Central, Mrs. Firth, assistant; Durham, Miss ■H. Eaaonj!'assistant; DirUanivMisaiiMcOormack, head teacher; Okau, Miss Chapman, sole teacher; Rowan, Miss Rowntree, solo teacher. The chairman's action was confirmed. GENERAL. In regard to the Central School Committee's application for a grant to assist in the cost of levelling the playground, a sub-committee reported tiiat it could not recommend a grant being made from the general fund.—lt was decided to recommend the Central School Committee to apply for a subsidy under the Education Act. The Taranaki branch of the Teachers' Institute wrote asking for permission to hold a physical instruction camp during the first week after the summer holidays, and that teachers attending the camp be allowed to close their schools.— The request was granted. The action of the Makahu, Tikorangi, and Toko School Committees in closing their schools owing to illness and Hoods was confirmed. The following resignations were accepted:—Mr. L. F. Buckler, assistant. Stratford; Miss V. Mills, sole teacher, Rowan; Mr. H. Mackie, sole teacher, Okau. The following were granted leave of absence:—Miss F. S. Grant, cooking instructress, Technical College; Miss M. I-ennon, pupil teacher, West End; Miss G. Mouat, pupil teacher, West End: Mr. W. A. Brown, head teacher, Leppei'ton; Miss Meyer, head teacher, Durham; Miss C Nisbet, assistant, Egmont Village. It was decided to grant the usual subsidy to the Mimi School Committee towards the erection of a shelter shed. The Minister of Labor wrote in regard to the Board's letter urging that boys who have taken a three years' course in a technical college should have at least two years taken off their term of apprenticeship, and stated that the matter was one to be fixed by the Arbitration Court.
