THE CABLE SERVICE.
ORITDCISBD IN THE HOUSE. Py Telegraph.—Press Association Wellington, Last Night. " i la tie Howe to-day, Mr. J. T. M'. Horueby said he desired to comment upon the cables that now came to New' Zealand per medium of the Press AsKwiation. He ! regretted that* we had only a -second-hand service. The Australian ; [papers got cables-direct from London,' | and we iiad to take what tiiey got. These second-hand cables often d'id not reflect British opinion, as they came' from poisoned sources. The Times and! Sydney Sun Service was the worat of ail,; as this class of news was prejudiced, bigoted, aad was part of a political pro, "' paganda, organised for the purpose of ' , misrepresenting British Liberals, and to' „>' destroy Lord Kitchener. He desired, particularly, to refer to the false and unfair reports that were being cabled out regarding the Irish people. These were simply shameless attacks upon a nation. There might have been Irish rebels in the past, but'he would ask everyone to , think upon the causes that had made them bo. There might be shirkers in Ireland, but there were shirkers elsewhere. He referred to the achievements of Irishmen in the Peninsula war, it ' , Waterloo, in South Africa, and in the present war, and appealed to the National Cabinet to prevent those false and misleading cables being sent to this dominion to the prejudice of the Irish people. ■ Messrs Colvin, Poole, Dr. Thacker, and Wilford delivered oulogiums on the brayory and loyalty of Irishmen. Mr. Massey remarked that after what had 'been said regarding Irishmen, he, as un Irishman, should put in e word for Englishmen and Scotsmen. Ho did '' not think it was necessary either to ' justify or apologise for ,tho Irish people, nor did he think it necessary to take the slightest notico of tho cables on this subject. Whatever had been the can in the past; there was no doubt that. Irishmen were now absolutely united, for the one object of upholding the £nj«, pile. '*
