TO HELP THE POOR.
THREE NIGHTS' EAIIt OPENED. The Britannia Fair, which lias been organised by the Salvation Army in aid of their funds to assist the poor, was opened in the (iood Templar Hall last night. The hall was prettily decorated with bunting and flags, which combined with the bright decorations of the numerous stalls placed around the ball to provide an attractive scene. There was a large number of people present, and they were rewarded with an enjoyable evening's entertainment. The Mayor "(Mr. J. E. Wilson), in opening the fair, remarked that one of the greatest ami most noble works carried out by the Salvation Army was its activities to promote bettor conditions amongst the poor, ami to enable the army officers to handle this problem successfully (hey required ample funds. The army was prepared to do this good work, and the least the public could do was to provide the funds. Mr. Wilson complimented the promoters on (he excellent arrangements which had been made, and he hoped the fair would .meet with the success it deserved. A short musical programme was carried out in the early portion of the evening. The Citizens' Hand, which played several selections outside the hall before the fair opened, gavcscveral more items, and songs were sung by Miss Rea and Mr. U. Lambert. The gathering then sang the National Anthem, after which the Mayor declared the fair open, and business commenced at the stalls, which were quickly surrounded by eager purchasers. The stall-holders were:—Drapery and fancy goods, Mesdames W. R. Home, Smith, Lancaster, Trim, and Misses Smith (2); home-made jam, Adjutant Pearn; woodwork, Mr. Carrington; lollies, Misses Horn and Roeh; flowers, Mr. Veal; refreshments, Mesdames Snfflet, and Crance and Misses Bennett and Trim; postcards, Misses Trim and ■Sifl'lct. The fair will be open again to-night and to-morrow night. A special attraction to-night will be a tableau, "Britannia and the Allies," and to-morrow night there will be a special programme for young people, in which children from the Centra! School will assist.
