EIGHTH REINFORCEMENTS.
NORTH TARANAKTS QUOTA. MEN FAREWELLED AT NEW PLYMOUTH. Members of the Eightli Reinforcements were a'ceorded a most enthusiastic send-off at the local station last night. The Territorials, Railway Reserve, and Rifle Club mustered at the drill hall in strong force. Headed by the Citizens' Band, the recruits, followed by the Territorials and Riflemen, marched to the station, via Devon and Brougham Streets. Near the railway bridge a platform had been improvised, and from this point 'speeches were delivered bv the member for the district (Mr. H. J. Okey), Rev. A. B. Chappell, and the Mayor (Mr. J. E. Wilson). There was a large crowd, numbering between three, and four thousand, and the proceedings were marked by great enthusiasm. Indeed, it. was the most enthusiastic function witnessed in New Plymouth since the war broke out. Mr. Okey referred to the splendid response of Taranaki, and especially New Plymouth, to the call to arms. They may not, he said, be the first in the way of paying handsomely for Belgian flags, but he thought they were among the first with men. He "referred briefly to the splendid response of all parts of the Empire to the call, and the way the colonials had sustained the glorious traditions of the race. He hoped the troopers going forth would uphold the good name of the men who had gone before, and, above all, to play the game. Rev. A. B. Chappell, in a spirited and earnest speech, referred to the motives actuating the men who were departing that night in offering their services to their country in its hour of need. They conceived it to be a greater duty to serve their country than to slop here. By helping to fight the battles of the Empire they felt they were really helping to save their own kith and kin from the ravages of the enemy. They realised the nature of the step they were taking, and all it involved, and were to be commended for the real patriotism they displayed. The Mayor expressed his intense admiration for the men who had enlisted and were leaving us so shortly—a feeling which lie was sure was shared by the people of the town, as evidenced by their presence in such numbers. To the men themselves he said he desired, on behalf of the townspeople, to say farewell. They must be well assured that they would carry with them our warmest'wishes for their welfare. They were going to join the men who formed the main force, who. with the Australians had been very aptly described as those who would be known in history as the "Men of Gallipoli." They would be proud to be associated with those men. His Worship said that he looked upon it as a good omen that on this day, when they were leaving us, we bad beard the news of the German defeat in the naval engagement,-in the Baltic. His Worship concluded by wishing the men God speed, and expressing the hope that he would have the happiness of welcoming them back again. ' At the conclusion of the speeches, the band played the National Anthem, and a move was made for the station. Here the Territorials furnished a guard ot honor, and the departing recruits were bid good-bye. The tram moved off to the tune of "Tipperary," played by the band, and the enthusiastic cheers ot many hundred voices. The men who left Now Plymouth
